Why Michiel Jan Mol Might Spend the Rest of His Life in Jail
As technology is developing, many space engineering and aeronautics companies are testing and trying different options for space tourism. Many people are attracted by the idea of seeing what is out there, but as this section of the tourism industry is still in its infancy, the possibility is reserved only for few very rich men. Till now, only seven people travelled to space, which is not surprising, as the price of one flight varies between 20 – 35 million dollars.
Year after year, more companies that are selling tickets for future flights are emerging, such as Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic or Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. They generally offer tickets at much lower but still pretty exorbitant prices.
But even if this is a new hype, there are already scam companies that are trying to take advantage of people who are able and willing to pay a lot for the chance to see the universe.
In 2010 a company called Space Expedition Corporation, founded and led by Michiel Mol, began to sell tickets for space voyage for 95 000 U.S. dollars. They made big promises to the clients, such as those that they will make spaceport, spacecraft, and a research center. Even if the company experienced some changes throughout 2014 and 2017, plans remained the same. Mol continued to lead the project as nothing was problematic. In June 2017, the company announced financial difficulties only to declare bankruptcy in November. As the money was never reimbursed, the disappointed clients started preparing a lawsuit against Mol and the company.
